Keep in mind that ESRI does NOT support ArcGIS for Mac, and that you can only use ArcGIS within one of the Windows OS installation options described above. When configuring Windows with any of these options, it is important the configuration meets the minimum system requirements for installing ArcGIS. The ESRI GeoNet Forum has more information on these options (search for "mac"). This option requires more resources (RAM & CPU) to run both OSes at the same time, as well as plenty of hard drive space (see the virtual machine options below for details). Check out the Free GIS Data Viewers page for more options. In addition to shapefiles, TNTatlas can also viewer GeoTIFF, JP2, PNG, MrSID, DXF, and DWG file formats. Typical choices for the virtualization option are the licensed software Parallels or VMware. If you’re looking for a Mac based free shapefile viewer, TNTatlas offers both a Mac and a Windows build of its data viewer. Option Two: Create a virtual machine on your Mac, which allows you to run an installation of Windows OS in parallel with your existing Mac OS, and to switch from one to the other without booting into either one separately. 128GB is recommended for the best experience. The last native effort by Esri to produce GIS software for the Mac was a ported version of ArcView in the early 1990s that never made it past pre-release.

You will need enough free disk space to create a Boot Camp disk partition with a minimum size of 64GB. Although Esri has released an app version of ArcGIS for iOS, ArcGIS unfortunately isn’t natively offered as a option for installing on a Macintosh computer. The following Mac models will support the 64-bit version of Windows 10 Home or Pro edition installed with Boot Camp: The typical method for this is to use the free software BootCamp.

The user can install Windows in Boot Camp, a native feature of the Apple Inc.’s OS X operating system, or they can use a virtualization program, such as Parallels or VMWare Fusion.

To run ArcGIS 10.x on an Apple Macintosh computer, the Mac must be set up to run Windows. ArcGIS for Desktop has been developed for Windows Operating systems, but there are many users out there running ArcGIS Desktop on Macs. If X11 is not already installed, install it from the Mac OS X installation.
